Faculty librarian Helena Arthur-Okor has been selected to participate in the 2012 Texas Accelerated Library Leaders Institute, or TALL Texans, of the Texas Library Association. The TALL Texans Leadership Development Institute provides advanced leadership and management education in service to all the libraries of Texas and the communities they serve. Helena joins the ranks of other Mary and John Gray Library personnel who have been selected as TALL Texans in previous years, including faculty librarians Karen Nichols and Theresa Hefner-Babb, as well as classified staff member Kim Wiley. Please extend your congratulations to Helena on this exciting opportunity.

Lamar faculty present Beaumont history on C-SPAN’s 2012 Cities Tour

• Special Collections, Lamar University Library - Visit the Special Collections Department to talk with Penny Clark, University Archivist, about the photo collection of Dorothy Becker, a nurse in World War II.
• Jeff Forret "Race Relations at the Margins" - Jeff Forret, Associate Professor of History and author of "Race Relations at the Margins: Slaves and Poor Whites in the Antebellum Southern Countryside" talks about the little explored topic of the relationship of poor whites and slaves in the south between 1820-1860.
• J. Lee Thompson "Theodore Roosevelt" - J. Lee Thompson, History Professor and author of "Theodore Roosevelt Abroad: Nature, Empire, and the Journey of an American President" tells us about Theodore Roosevelt's 15 month post-presidential expedition to Africa and Europe.
• Beaumont Race Riots of 1943 - Robert Robertson, History Instructor, takes us to Forsythe Street, which is one of many streets that was mobbed during the Beaumont race riots in 1943.
• Gladys City Boomtown - Tour Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown with Director Mark Osbourne, who takes us through several of the buildings that were recreated as replicas of the actual buildings that existed in Gladys City during the two oil booms of the 20th century.
• Spindletop Oilfied - Visit the actual site of the Spindletop Oilfield with Jo Ann Stiles, Co-Author of "Giant Under the Hill" and former History Professor. Jo Ann talks about the events leading up to the discovery of oil at the Spindletop Oilfield as well as the people who were involved in this story of challenges and triumphs.

Tuskegee Airmen exhibit features Dempsey Nelson, Jr., a Tuskegee Airman, and father of Lamar alum Dempsey Nelson, III:
The recent movie, Red Tails, tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American pilots in U.S. history. An exhibit in the library lobby, created by Penny Clark and Charlotte Holliman, highlights the life of one of the airmen, Dempsey Nelson, Jr., who was the father of Lamar alum, Dempsey Nelson III, who shared the photos with the library.

The Tuskegee Airmen endured both the prejudice in American society at that time and the horrors of aerial battle, but persevered and made groundbreaking contributions, which both helped to end the war in Europe and to change attitudes toward African-Americans’ role in the military.
